INTEREST IN MIXED INTEGER PROGRAMMING (MPSX ON 360/91 AT CCN)

MPSX is a newer version of the IBM project MPS, used for integer
programming. From what I've been told, MPSX outperforms the previous
package. In addition, it has available a feature of mixed integer
programming.

Since MPSX is an IBM product, an installation which uses it is
charged a fixed rental fee per month. At the present time, CCN does
not have this processor with its system. We are anticipating asking
them to install it, with the mixed integer programming option. We
are looking for any other users from the Network who may need this
software in order to prorate the cost between several installations.
The initial estimate of the cost is $130/month, plus $225 for the
mixed integer programming feature. A share of this cost would be
assigned to each user of the system. I am told by Robert Bell of CCN
that they could take care of those details for us.

If you have an interest in this, I urge you to contact me within
the month. If you have questions about the mixed integer programming
feature of the MPSX system itself, you could contact:

                     University of Illinois
                     Center for Advanced Computation

                     Tel: (217) 333-3036

Of course, in the meantime, the system MPS is available on the
CCN system.

PROBLEMThe University of Illinois was considering MPSX with mixed integer programming, which carried a monthly rental cost.
MECHANISMThe author asks network users whether they would use the package so the cost could be divided among participating sites.
A REQUEST FOR INTERESTThe notice seeks expressions of interest; it says the existing MPS system was available at CCN in the meantime.

§1The MPSX Package

Karl Kelley describes MPSX as a newer version of IBM's MPS mathematical programming package. He says MPSX was reported to outperform its predecessor and included a mixed integer programming feature. CCN did not then have MPSX installed.

MPSX was a newer IBM program for mathematical programming. The proposed installation would include its mixed integer programming option.

§2Sharing the Rental Cost

Because IBM charged a fixed monthly rental, the University of Illinois was considering asking CCN to install MPSX with the mixed integer option. The initial estimate was $130 per month for the package plus $225 for that option. The notice proposed assigning each user's share of the cost to participating sites.

The author gives the estimated rental prices and proposes splitting them among users. CCN could handle the cost-sharing details.

§3Invitation to Contact the Author

Kelley asks interested network users to contact him within the month. He directs questions about the mixed integer feature to Stewart Schuster at the University of Illinois. The notice also says that MPS, the earlier system, was available on the CCN system while the decision was pending.

Interested users were asked to respond within the month. The older MPS package remained available at CCN.
