Change in Socket for TIP News Facility

The Socket which supports the TIP News Facility has been changed to
socket 367 (Octal) at BBN-TENEX. TIP users should be uneffected by this
change since the TIP program has already been changed to ICP to the new
socket. Because some user TELNET programs have been implemented a
"news" command, the old socket will be maintained until April 15, 1973
to give implementers time to change to the new socket.

PROBLEMThe socket supporting the TIP News facility at BBN-TENEX was changed.
MECHANISMThe facility moved to socket 367 octal; the TIP program had already been changed to use it.
A SERVICE CHANGEThe old socket was to remain available until April 15, 1973, for TELNET programs using the news command.

§1The New TIP News Socket

RFC 470 announces that the socket supporting the TIP News facility at BBN-TENEX changed to socket 367 octal. The notice says TIP users should not be affected because the TIP program had already been changed to use the new socket.

The TIP News facility moved to socket 367 octal. The TIP program had already been updated, so its users should not notice the change.

§2Keeping the Old Socket Temporarily

Some user TELNET programs had implemented a news command that used the old socket. To give their implementers time to change those programs, the old socket was to be maintained until April 15, 1973.

Programs that still used the old socket had until April 15, 1973, to change. The notice does not state the old socket number.

§3A Socket Change Notice

The RFC communicates a change to the TIP News facility's socket and a transition period for user TELNET programs. It does not describe a change to the TIP News content or service behavior.

This notice is about where programs connect to TIP News. It gives a date for maintaining the old connection point.
