Upcoming Move of NIC/NLS Services

Statement of Upcoming Move of NIC/NLS Services

Within the next few weeks we will be transferring computer services for
our ROME, ARPA, and NIC users from the ARC/NIC system to a new system we
are installing at TYMSHARE in Cupertino, Ca. The name of this system is
OFFICE-1 and is site 53 (oct) when talking to TELNET or site 43 (dec)
when talking to a TIP. Currently we are experiencing hardware
difficulties on this system, but we and the staff at TYMSHARE are
working diligently to solve the problems. Once the hardware is solid and
reliable, the above users will have their directories transferred to the
OFFICE-1 facility, and receive their NLS power from that site. Watch for
upcoming announcements as to the exact date when your directory will be
moved to OFFICE-1.

PROBLEMThe RFC announces a planned transfer of ROME, ARPA and NIC users' computer services from ARC/NIC to a system being installed at TYMSHARE.
MECHANISMThe new system, OFFICE-1, would receive users' directories and provide their NLS service after its hardware became reliable.
THE PLANNED MOVEThe exact move date had not yet been announced; users were asked to watch for a later notice.

§1Services Moving to OFFICE-1

The RFC says that within the next few weeks, computer services for ROME, ARPA and NIC users would be transferred from the ARC/NIC system to OFFICE-1, a new system being installed at TYMSHARE in Cupertino, California. Once the hardware was reliable, the users' directories would be transferred and they would receive NLS service from OFFICE-1.

The Network Information Center planned to move several users' services and directories to a new computer called OFFICE-1. After the move, NLS service would come from that system.

§2Hardware Readiness and Site Numbers

At the time of the notice, the new system was experiencing hardware difficulties. The NIC and TYMSHARE staff were working to resolve them before transferring the users' directories. The RFC identifies OFFICE-1 as site 53 (octal) for Telnet and site 43 (decimal) when talking to a TIP.

The transfer depended on fixing hardware problems first. The RFC gives different site numbers for Telnet and TIP connections.

§3The Date Was Still To Be Announced

The RFC does not give an exact transfer date. It asks users to watch for upcoming announcements that would identify when their directories were to be moved to OFFICE-1.

Users did not yet have a move date. The note says a later announcement would provide it.
