                          NETWORK HOST STATUS

This RFC reports on the status of most Network Hosts from February 14
to February 25. On February 21 Massachusetts celebrated Washington's
Birthday. During these two weeks the MIT Artificial Intelligence
   (MIT-AI) PDP-10, Network address 134, became a Network User.

Several Hosts are currently excluded from the daily testing. These
   Hosts fall into two categories:

      1) Hosts which are not expected to be functioning on the Network
as servers (available for use from other sites) on a regular basis
for at least two weeks. Included here are:

      Network
      Address Site Computer
      ------- ---- --------
      134 MIT-AI PDP-10
       13 Case PDP-10
       15 Ames/(Paoli) ILLIAC/(B6500)

      2) Hosts which are currently intended to be users only. Included
here are the Terminal IMP's which are presently in the Network
(AMES, MITRE, NBS and BBN*). This category also includes the
Network Control Center computer (Network Address 5) which is used
solely for gathering statistics from the Network. Finally,
included among these Hosts are the following:

      Network
      Address Site Computer
      ------- ---- --------
       7 Rand IBM-360/65
      73 Harvard PDP-1
      12 Illinois PDP-11
      19 NBS PDP-11

The tables on the next two pages summarize the Host status for this
   period.

D = Dead (Destination Host either dead or inaccessible [due to
network partitioning or local IMP failure] from the BBN Terminal
       IMP.)

H = 1/2 Open (Destination Host opened a connection but then either
immediately closed it, or did not respond any further.)

O = Open (Destination Host opened a connection and was accessible to
       users.)

R = Refused (Destination Host returned a CLS to the initial RFC.)

T = Timed out (Destination Host did not complete the ICP and open a
       connection within 60 seconds.)

   _____
*The only service currently offered by the UCLA IBM-360/91 is a
Network Job Service (NETRJS), however, the BBN Terminal IMP is not
equipped to test NETRJS. We are assuming that initial connection to
the NETRJS logger indicates that NETRJS is also functioning.

PROBLEMNetwork users needed a record of host accessibility and which machines could provide services to other sites.
MECHANISMThe report lists hosts excluded from testing, operator-reported status or predictions, and daily test results for the period.
WHAT THE REPORT RECORDSIt records MIT-AI's change to a network user and was later replaced by RFC 319.

§1The Reporting Period

The report covers most Network Hosts from February 14 through February 25. It notes that MIT-AI's PDP-10, network address 134, became a Network User during those two weeks.

The report identifies hosts not expected to function as servers regularly for at least two weeks and hosts intended only as users. It then summarizes host status in tables.

This report covers most hosts for the listed period. It notes that MIT-AI became a network user and explains which machines were not included in daily tests.

§2Tests and Status Codes

The table lists test results at the dates and Eastern times shown. O means a host opened a connection and was accessible to users. D means it was dead or inaccessible from the BBN Terminal IMP; H means it opened a connection but immediately closed it or stopped responding.

R means the host refused the initial request. T means it did not complete the Initial Connection Protocol and open a connection within 60 seconds. A mark identifies sites that said their systems might not be available at those times.

Each letter describes one connection test. The codes distinguish an accessible host from one that was unreachable, timed out, refused a connection or only partly opened it.

§3Operator Status and Replacement

A separate table records site operators' status or predictions for hosts. Entries include Server, User only, Soon and expected dates, with a source person named for many predictions.

The unit metadata records RFC 319 as the document that later obsoleted RFC 315.

The report includes what site operators said about each host's role or expected readiness. RFC 319 later replaced it.
