Official Host-Host Protocol Modification: Assigned Link Numbers

     I. Links 192,193,194 and 195 (decimal) are assigned for use by the
         Message Switching Protocol (MSP) experiment.

II. Links 159 through 190 (decimal) are assigned for network
measurement purposes. These links are to be used only under
the direction of the Network Measurement Center (NMC). Contact
Vint Cerf, (213) 825-2368 for additional information.

III. On page 28 of NIC 8246 the link assignment table should read:

         LINK NUMBER ASSIGNMENT

         0 Control Link

         2-71 Available for Connection

         1, 72-158 Reserved--not for current use

159-191 To be used only for measurement work
under the direction of the Network
                                Measurement Center at UCLA

192-195 To be used for the Message Switching
                                Protocol experiment

196-255 Available for private experimental use

PROBLEMThe Host-Host Protocol's link assignment table needed specific ranges for network measurement and the Message Switching Protocol experiment.
MECHANISMRFC 317 assigns links 192 through 195 to the Message Switching Protocol experiment and links 159 through 190 for measurement under the Network Measurement Center.
REPLACED BY RFC 604It also corrects the link assignment table in NIC 8246. The RFC was later obsoleted by RFC 604.

§1Additional Link Assignments

RFC 317 assigns Host-Host Protocol links 192, 193, 194, and 195 to the Message Switching Protocol experiment. It assigns links 159 through 190 for network measurement under the direction of the Network Measurement Center.

Some link numbers are set aside for particular work. This RFC assigns a range to measurement and four links to an experiment.

§2The Corrected Assignment Table

The corrected table lists link 0 as the Control Link; 2 through 71 as available for connections; 1 and 72 through 158 as reserved; 159 through 191 for measurement under the UCLA Network Measurement Center; 192 through 195 for the Message Switching Protocol experiment; and 196 through 255 for private experimental use.

The table separates the link numbers into control, connection, reserved, measurement, and experimental uses. It gives each range and its assignment.

§3Correction and Later Status

RFC 317 says that the link assignment table on page 28 of NIC 8246 should read as reproduced in the document. The unit metadata lists RFC 604 as the RFC that later obsoleted RFC 317.

The RFC corrects the earlier table so readers have a consistent assignment list. A later RFC replaced this document.
