NETWORK HOST STATUS
This RFC reports on the status of most Network Hosts from July 17
to July 28.
On Tuesday, July 18, the new IMP software was released.
Several Hosts are currently excluded from the daily testing as
they are presently intended to be users only. Included here are the
Terminal IMPs, which are presently in the Network (AMES, MITRE, RADC,
NBS, ETAC, USC, GWC, NOAA, SAAC, ARPA, and BBN*). This category also
includes the Network Control Center computer (Network address 5) which
is used solely for gathering statistics from the Network. Finally,
included among these Hosts are the following:

7 Rand IBM-360/65
73 Harvard PDP-1
138 Lincoln TSP
12 Illinois PDP-11
19 NBS PDP-11

The tables on the next two pages summarize the Host status
for this period.

D = Dead (Destination Host either dead or inaccessible [due to network
partitioning or local IMP failure] from the BBN Terminal IMP.)
F = Full (Destination Host opened a connection, informed user that all
Network ports were in use, and immediately closed the connection.)
H = 1/2 Open (Destination Host opened a connection but then either
immediately closed it, or did not respond any further.)
O = Open (Destination Host opened a connection and was accessible to users.)
R = Refused (Destination Host returned a CLS to the initial RFC.)
T = Timed out (Destination Host did not complete the ICP and open a
connection within 60 seconds.)

*The only service currently offered by the UCLA IBM-360/91 is a Network
Job Service (NETRJS), however, the BBN Terminal IMP is not equipped to
test NETRJS. We are assuming that initial connection to the NETRJS
logger indicates that NETRJS is also functioning.
#These sites advertise that they may not have their system available at
these times.

§1Reporting Period and Exclusions
The report covers most Network Hosts from July 17 to July 28. New IMP software was released on Tuesday, July 18.
Hosts intended only to use network services are left out of daily testing. These include Terminal IMPs, the Network Control Center computer used to gather statistics, and several other hosts listed in the report. The BBN Terminal IMP at Network Address 158 is a prototype and is often disconnected while its programs are refined.
The report covers two weeks of host tests and notes when the network's new IMP software was released. Some user-only hosts were not tested as servers.
§2Host Status and Predictions
A table lists the network address, site, computer, status or prediction, and source of that information for each host. Entries include server, user-only, never and soon, as well as expected months of availability. A star marks a host not included in daily testing.
The report also notes that the NMC at address 1 is a research site that asks users to make prior arrangements. The UCLA IBM-360/91 offered NETRJS, which the BBN Terminal IMP could not test directly.
One table summarizes what each site said about its host. A star shows which hosts were left out of daily testing.
§3Daily Test Results
The test table gives results and Eastern test times for dates from July 17 to July 28. Its codes distinguish an accessible open host, a dead or inaccessible host, a half-open connection, a refusal, a timeout and a full host. A timeout means the host did not finish the Initial Connection Protocol and open a connection within 60 seconds.
A hash mark means the site had said its system might not be available. Since the Terminal IMP could not test NETRJS at the UCLA IBM-360/91, the report assumed that reaching the NETRJS logger meant the service was functioning.
Each test result has a letter that describes what happened. The legend also identifies a host that answered but had no network ports available.
- DDead — Host was dead or inaccessible from the BBN Terminal IMP.
- FFull — Host opened a connection, reported all ports in use, and closed it.
- HHalf open — Host opened a connection, then closed it or stopped responding.
- OOpen — Host opened a connection and was accessible to users.
- RRefused — Host returned a CLS to the initial RFC.
- TTimed out — Host did not complete the ICP and open a connection within 60 seconds.
