IMP/TIP Memory Retrofit Schedule (Revision 1)

This revision contains two major changes to RFC #434. First, all
retrofits scheduled prior to February first have been completed and are
therefore removed from the schedule. Second, the CCA retrofit has been
rescheduled from 3/20 to 2/28.

The revised text of RFC # 434 follows:

During the first several month of 1973 we will be retrofitting each IMP
and TIP with additional core memory. At the end of the retrofit
program, the memory sizes of the various machines will be as follows:

   IMP (516 or 316) - 16K words

   TIP - 28K words

TIP with Magnetic Tape Option - 32K words

In addition, the expansion of the TIP core memory will necessitate
enlarging the TIP to two cabinets.

Listed below is the schedule for the remaining retrofits. We have
arranged this schedule to coincide with usual monthly Preventive
Maintenance at each site so as to minimize user inconvenience, but the
work required will frequently require the machines to be down longer
than normal. I will issue additional RFC's updating this schedule as
necessary.

Any site which anticipates difficulty with the expansion of TIP size,
and thus the floor space requirement, should contact Hawley Rising (BBN)

PROBLEMThe network's IMP and TIP machines were scheduled to receive additional core memory, requiring coordinated work at each site.
MECHANISMThis revision removes retrofits completed before February and moves the CCA date to February 28, then lists the remaining site dates.
THE REVISED SCHEDULEThe schedule states the planned memory sizes and retrofit dates. RFC 476 later replaced this revision.

§1What Changed in the Revision

RFC 447 revises RFC 434, which scheduled additional core memory for IMPs and TIPs during the first several months of 1973. This revision says that work scheduled before February 1 had been completed and was removed from the schedule. It also moves the CCA retrofit from March 20 to February 28.

This revision updates an earlier hardware-work schedule. It removes work already completed and gives CCA an earlier retrofit date.

§2Planned Memory and Equipment Changes

At the end of the retrofit program, the listed memory sizes were 16K words for an IMP (516 or 316), 28K words for a TIP, and 32K words for a TIP with the magnetic tape option. The expanded TIP memory required the TIP to occupy two cabinets.

The plan gives different final memory sizes for IMPs and TIPs. An expanded TIP would also need two cabinets.

§3Remaining Site Dates

The remaining retrofit dates run from Utah on February 1 through Illinois on April 18. The schedule was arranged to coincide with regular monthly preventive maintenance, but the RFC warns that the work could keep machines down longer than usual. Sites expecting difficulty with the extra TIP floor-space requirement were asked to contact BBN.

The RFC lists a planned date for each site. Work was coordinated with maintenance, although a machine could be unavailable longer than usual.

§4Status of the Schedule

This RFC is a revision to a dated retrofit schedule. The unit metadata identifies RFC 476 as its replacement.

This schedule describes planned work in 1973. RFC 476 later replaced it.
